I was diagnosed with cancer at just 24 — but paraclimbing has given my life new purpose

Why me? What did I do to deserve this? I can’t do this any more. Those were the three things I thought to myself as my doctor told me I had cancer at 24. My life, already complicated by health issues, was about to get far more complex.

I was born with my right arm missing below the elbow and had a few other issues that had been corrected surgically – but I was also a sporty kid. I competed in swimming and then found Shotokan karate. Sport has always been an escape for me, a sanctuary from whatever stress is going on in life.
